On the Sorbs' traces in Bautzen
The Millennium Monument

The monument erected in honour of Cyril and Methodius highlights the Sorbs' attachment to the other Slavic peoples.

Near the historic Via Regia there is a monument in honour of Cyril and Methodius. Byzantine scholars and priests from Thessaloniki are the Christian missionaries of the Slavic peoples in the 9th century. For this reason the two are also called "Slavic apostles". The greatest merit of the two brothers lies in the emphasis on the Slavic mother tongue and the cultural independence of the Slavic peoples. In the middle of the 19th century the priest Michael Hornik founded the association Cyrill-Methodius with his like-minded people. Although in the meantime it has been proven that the Sorbs were missionized by the diocese of Meissen, the Sorbs continue to worship Cyrill and Methodius. In 2000 the association built the Millennium Monument at its present location. Mehr
